“I’m a United States Marine. We look like soldiers, talk like sailors, slap the shit out of both of them. We stole the eagle from the Air Force, the rope from the Army, the anchor from the Navy. And on the seventh day when God rested, we overran his perimeter and we’ve been running the show ever since. Warrior by day, lover by night, drunkard by choice, Marine by God. Semper fidelis.”
Another from April. For a very, very rare two post day. I’ve been waiting since April for today for this post, though, and I couldn’t let this pass by once I remembered. I had been trying to get to this monument for a year and a half before I made it. It was my requested first stop on the way in to DC. At long last.
The United States Marine Corps War Memorial is located in Arlington, Virginia. The memorial depicts the iconic flag raising by Marines on Iowa Jima during World War II. The memorial is open to the public year round.
*Quote from the miniseries Generation Kill. Based on the book of the same name by an embedded Rolling Stones reporter (Evan Wright), the seven episode series follows the true story of Recon Marines during the beginning of the American invasion of Iraq.
